Voluntary work at Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)， Selangor (8th November 2012)

Besides Zoo Negara, my group members also planned to be volunteers in SPCA for our community service in order to help those abandoned and abused animals. After some discussion, my group members decided to go SPCA with other groups on 8^th November 2012. SPCA Selangor is an animal welfare organisation based in Ampang Jaya, Selangor. It is a well-respected and trusted Non-Profit Organisation that was established in 1958 to protect animals in Selangor and the Federal Territory. Today they have a wide range of activities all with one common aim which is to protect defenseless animals and alleviate their suffering. They receive more than 700 unwanted, homeless or abused animals every month. The reasons we chose SPCA was due to we are enthusiastic animal lovers. We hope to spend some time with animals. Some of them were abandoned by their owners and they really need our care.    

            We reached the place at 10 o’clock in the morning. I observed that there are two sections there. This is because they need to separate the dogs and the cats. Most of the dogs are kept in cages whereas some are left outside. There are many cages to be cleaned, dogs to be taken care and lots of work to do so they really need many volunteers. The staff explained to us on what should we do. First, we helped to clean cages where puppies are being kept and changed the old newspaper that contains some animal waste and food waste. Their drinking water is replaced with clean water. Then, the staff brought us to the cats’ section. We washed the surrounding area, changed the old newspaper with new one, poured the leftover food in the food container into rubbish bags and replaced some tinned cat foods in the container. After cleaning the cats’ cages, we helped them to bring all the plastic containers that contain rice that they had prepared to feed the puppies and the dogs. We went home after finished feeding the animals.

            I learned to be kind to animals through this volunteering experience at SPCA, It is very happy to see that they have a clean shelter. Life is life and there is no difference between a cat, a dog or man. Societies must be responsible to take care of their own pets and respect them as life. Concern for animals is a matter of taking the side of the weak against the strong, something the best people have always done.          

IMU Chariofare (22nd September 2012)

            Chariofare 2012 is a programme that is organized by International Medical University (IMU). It is part of IMU’s corporate social responsibility programme. The aim of this programme is to raise funds for six beneficiaries, namely Rumah Love & Care at Kajang, Rumah Shalom at Puchong, Precious Children Home at Petaling Jaya, Yayasan Sunbeams Home at Cheras, Persatuan Kebajikan HOPE Worldwide at Kuala Lumpur and Association Of Social Services And Community Development Of Gombak District at Selangor. There were two activities including Charity Run and carnival in this chariofare. The objective that I involved in this event is to develop my skills in planning and organizing an event.  Besides that, I also hope to make a difference in each and every child under the care of these homes by raising fund for them.

            Mr. Lim Chee Siong was the leader of our Pharmaceutical Chemistry booth. We divided ourselves into four groups that in charge of foods and drinks preparation and selling for both morning and afternoon session. Two groups who were on duty in the morning and another two groups of people were on duty in the afternoon. I joined the foods and drinks preparation group for morning session. There were another four persons who joined this group including Sasitaran, Abirami, Gan Li Ting and Tai Chieh Hwa. Our task was preparing foods and drinks for sale. I was helping other coursemates to set up our booth, steam sausages and sweet corns, prepare sausage buns and prepare milo drinks. After preparing the foods and drinks, we sent them to the booth at the atrium for sale. The money that we had earned was donated to those six beneficiaries through IMU.

            Besides helping our universities to raise fund for those charity homes, I learned to stay calm and cool in every situation no matter what is happening to us. In addition, I get to know more about my lecturers as we were solving the problems that we faced on that day. The relationship between me and my coursemates were strengthened as well because we need to handle different challenges together.

3R event

         

         3R event was organised by PC1/11. The objective of this event is to create awareness besides bringing effect and behavioral change on the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) campaign among students. All the proceeds will be channeled to the charity homes through IMU. Each students have to make a product by using recyclable items such as newspaper and plastic bags. I spent about 1 month to make my products. We were displaying our products at atrium for 2 days and selling them to the students and lecturers. Here are some of the pictures of my products. 

The name of my product is Box of Drawers. They are multiple use boxes that have a few drawers. My products are made up of shoes boxes, left-over wrapping papers, matches box, old magazine and plastic bags. The origami bunny is made from left-over colour papers and it took me about 1 week to finish it. The reasons for me to make these boxes are due to a box that contains many drawers can be used to keep different items according to categories and a lot of space can be saved. Besides that, it looks nice and can be used as a decorative item if we put the box in living room. However, the main purpose is to make use of the old shoes boxes and some left-over wrapping papers. We throw the shoes boxes most of the time and it is not environmental friendly, so why don't make it into something that is very useful? It is very simple to wrap a shoes box and turn it into a simple container to keep our stuff.

Introduction

            This is a blog for me to write what have I done in my community service during the semester break in Semester 3. The module coordinator of electives, Mr. Lim Chee Siong has assigned us to complete our community service during our semester break. The places that I have chosen for my elective are Zoo Negara, SPCA, IMU and Mawar Medical Centre. For Zoo Negara, SPCA and IMU, I have completed all the three the community service together with my coursemates.  On the other hand, for the community service in Mawar medical centre, I contacted the welfare department of the medical centre and registered as a volunteer to work there for 11 days. The objectives of this community service are to expose students to the community-based activities, to inculcate the value of caring and sharing among students toward the society and to develop skills in planning and organising a project or activity.
